::314 is the chronicles of Sol-III, Earth, in the twilight 40 years following the Occupation and the subsequent early Liberation. The Combine has long gone silent, and it has been twenty years since the end of active battle against them. Instead, the world has reorganized into Liberation States, speared by rebel cells worldwide and helmed by various ideologies. New generations have sprouted without the shadow of the Clamp. Man has replaced synth as ruler.
North America lies in ruin - shattered by endless rifts, spewed on and mangled by Portal Storms into the surreal. South America lives perilously, trickling under threat of the alien fauna. Africa is host to a mega-hive containing the Myrmidon - a grand Antlion King within. Eurasia lies under a cyclical authoritarian authority - Lambda in Europe - and various other states, each poised at each-other's borders, with a Mandate of Heaven in the East. Oceania lives with expanded territory, much like the dried Black Sea, of broken salt flats and twisted corals.

OUR WOUNDED EARTH
In the beginning of the Third Millennium - a peculiar discovery is made within government-funded laboratories at Black Mesa, a secluded and top-secret, heavily guarded research complex situated within the New Mexico badlands. "Resonance" was the new term for it. Helmed by captains of science, Dr. Isaac Kleiner and Dr. Eli Vance, they posited that all objects have a certain quality that attracts high and low exotic frequencies. At precarious levels, these frequencies may even warp or shift matter. Their research had allowed them a breakthrough: the "Anti Mass Spectrometer", allowing study through sample into a previously unknown borderworld in the thin membrane between dimensions - Xen, and its alien life within. Something went wrong within Black Mesa, and the Resonance Cascade occurs, puncturing Xen into Earth through a rift, held up by an anima of a great mind. Its echoes shortly follow.
The ripples of the Resonance Cascade came in what can only be described as extradimensional terror. Portal storms scorching the lands - Xenian wildlife attacking the country - and emergency measures being put in place by governments worldwide in the month long period between the Cascade and the Seven Hour War. Eventually, a nebulous intelligence which small minds can only describe as the Combine - who still entirely are not comprehended - takes note of Earth, and opts to invade. This is the Seven Hour War, where war-synth and spires containing massive dark energy reactors are teleported into major urban centers. Earth had become battleground for the Combine and alien phenomena. Surrender is negotiated by one Doctor Wallace Breen, self quoted a scientist, not a politician, through proxy in the United Nations Security Council, and Earth lays down her arms to the Bulwark - another planet claimed and to have its sentient life slowly be subsumed as synthetic creation and tool of war.
The global state of emergency persists, even after the surrender of Earth. Military forces are integrated into the structure of the Combine's garrison upon 314, the new moniker of Sol-III, as Overwatch forces. The Security Council is stretched out and mutilated, grafted surgically into the human face of the Combine, with the Chinese government being the helm to impose authoritarian rule into the dissolved world nations into the One State. Police are reconditioned and given new uniforms, scientists work for the prospect of advancement under great alien intelligences, and military become the first transhumans - the testbed for synthetic human replication into the Combine's main military forces. Everybody lives in the shadow of great Citadels, mile-high spires, and forever are enshackled to the state.
For two decades, humanity forgets the taste of freedom in their mouth - to live in routine, in great tenements, to eat the provided supplements.
In one week, humanity remembers the spirit, lead on by a man in an orange powered armor suit.

Forty-five years is a long time for most people — a lifetime for some. Long enough to heal the last scars of the whip. Long enough to forget the little things, like the taste of stale air. But you remember, don't you, Mr. Freeman? It was no time at all for you.
::314 - SOL-III, 2063 AD, 45 AFTER LIBERATION
::314 is the chronicles of Sol-III, Earth, in the twilight 45 years following the Occupation and the subsequent early Liberation.
Military forces are integrated into the structure of the Combine's garrison upon 314, the new moniker of Sol-III, as Overwatch forces - more particularly, the Stabilization Force. The Security Council is stretched out and mutilated, grafted surgically into the human face of the Combine into the Overwatch Security Council, ruler of the civilian structures we all know as the Civil Authority, with the Chinese government being the helm to impose authoritarian rule into the dissolved world nations into the One State, the second language of bureaucracy becoming Mandarin.

In one week, humanity remembers the spirit, lead on by a man - perhaps even messiah, deity in a HEV suit.

WHAT COMES AFTER - THE UNCERTAIN NOW
The messiah of humanity, Gordon Freeman, disappears in the turbulent fighting in the months to follow of his resurgence and then sudden departure. The last sighting of Gordon Freeman is at White Forest, a Mi-8 helicopter taking off and bound South with its flight transponder turned off. He is never seen again, at least by sane minds not entrenched in Vortihoof or a synth-oil stupor. A massive dark energy explosion is heard reverbing through the entire Black Sea as Nova Prospekt, a maximum security Combine organ detonates into nothing more then old post-soviet rubble. Then, another dark energy explosion coils through the entire Earth as we know it. Citadel-17 detonates in a blaze of glory, with the urban blocs of City 17 raptured and twisted into mangled pieces of concrete, bathed in unknown exotic particles and high-resonance-frequencies. The underground liberation movements, the bluesuit rioters, and the downtrodden salaryman realize that now is the time to finally take up arms, and the streetwars begin globally. Some cities fall overnight with death tolls in the ten thousands, while others continue a tenous grip to their master - the greater CMB and Overwatch structure.

These Warlord States were short-lived, but contributed indirect blows to the still-loyal element of the global CMB.
Ultimately, the human spirit triumphs in the indifference of the Combine. They are pushed back to the Arctic Circle within fifteen years of fighting, her official children, born of Overwatch, broken and fragmented into warbands, remnant garrisons, and hiding bureaucrats and researchers alike. States begin to organize, begin to form of the rebel cells and their treaties and ratification. Unlike what many would believe, their home countries never entirely return, thwarted by Security Council measures of mass relocation to ensure a lack of cohesion in the populace and to stop organization attempts of rebellion. What is born of the rebel cells is creole of culture, their leaders and fighters backgrounds meshing all together to form the new Liberation States. No unified America, Russia, China, England ever comes back to fruition - instead, a world of these new infant nations rise as the shadows of the Citadels begin to draw away. Freedom had come to the world at last, even if it was not like times prior to the Occupation.

By 15 AL (After Liberation), these fledglings, product of rebel cell and cultural mishmash, had divided themselves each a cut across the world's continents. The following will not cover all states - only the very notable and powerful ones relating to our current time. Lambda organizes into a democratic state, its first elected leaders the venerated heroes Arne Magnusson, Isaac Kleiner, and Judith Mossman, who control most of Western and Central Europe. Many states in Eastern Europe and parts of Western Russia falls under the order of the Pan-slavic oriented Revolutionary Corps, now rebranded Sarmatia, holding onto the last vestiges of Eastern European and Pan-Slavic hypernationalism in the multiculture produced by the Combine. The Eurasian Liberation Army, one of the most prominent rebel cells in the East, takes East Russia, China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and alike steppes, taking the new moniker of Free Russochina, former Nomenklatura of the Chinese bureaucracy leading their efforts.
Africa is split into fifths after a bloodless revolution, albeit some parts being left uninhabited. Sahara - a massive swathe of desert, accelerated by the Combine's ecoterror, host to an Antlion Superhive - nomadic peoples shepherding flocks of the bugs alongside their Vortal companions for trade and export of their product. The Niger and Volta Niger - the Congress for the Liberation of the Western Coast, also known as the CLWC, uses Combine refineries in order to export crude oils to the rest of the world. Congo and the Nile have merged into one, a practical wasteland ravaged by a failed Combine attempt to reopen a superportal - Portal Storms blocking North and South. The South takes the name of the Kalahari Union, holding the exotic science capital of the Africas in Cape Town.
Those smaller nations, America in the North remains uninhabitable and blasted lands, aside from the shining of the East Coast - littered in autonomous collectives of settlements and other such escaped peoples and holdout Combine research monitoring installations. In the South, South America, especially near the Lithium Triangle, there once existed Maoist enclaves and Ravouxists - the Shining Path.

The Combine themselves are never seen again in any large effort after 20 AL, their remnants dispersing around 15 AL back into Antarctica. A dozen stark white ships flew across the skies through twenty different sectors in a hasty retreat. Transhumans of various phase and generation, from the time of the Occupation to those produced in labs of the Postoccupation, marching in lockstep, beaten, licking their wounds. The fickle few synthetic units and mechanized cavalry beating it across roads, old bridges, and highways. With the sudden appearance of large fields of portal storms - now referred to as Thresholds, blocking off the South Pole, no attempt at fully ending their Garrison on Earth is fully done, leaving them to unknown devices in the heavy snow.
Across the world, these Liberation States wrote their own accords and constitutions, imposed law and rebuilt and reconstructed in the aftermath of the Occupation, eyes like pilot lights to the sky. There could have been hope for the world - to advance, to progress. Five years of actual advancement could have steered Humanity into a new Pax Romana - or perhaps Pax Terra, of indefinite growth. A generation was born in those five years knowing not of the battles their parents had to endure, only through recantings in text or tale. All good things, however, come to an end. By hubris, war, greed, or perhaps by human nature, by 20 AL - things began to unravel at the seams. Wars sprouted between Free Russochina and Sarmatia, fighting for holds in Russia. A failed assassination attempt hospitalizes the elderly Judith Mossman, and Maxwell Kleiner, vice third-elect of Lambda, imposes emergency measures and becomes the regent of Lambda - democratic measures suspended. The cycle repeats with the world's new authoritarians. Things certainly do stabilize in the two-decade period between 25 and 45 AL, but under worse tides.
Those were long years then, and they only grow ever-distant now.

Across the world, the fires of liberation have already sprung - left to continue another twenty years of attrition.
An arms race begins between the unified Resistances and insurgencies of the world as they face down the last of the Combine and their terrible creations. Settlements shattered under war-synth raid, entire garrisons razed by unknown alien scientific principles - still, the rebellious spirit endures, with no intent to back down to their former masters. Lambda launches several rockets into atmosphere, blocking any further attempt to reconnect to the Homeworld. Overwatch strains under the pressure, and her Security Council breaks away in chunks - first, some human dignitaries willingly working with the Resistance - second, entire offices being cleared out and disposed of by insurgents - and third, entire connections being renounced by men at even the highest level. Even Overwatch herself is disconnected from some CMB holdouts as warlordism begins to prevail among her still-held territories, those few remaining Urban Centers opting to detach from her global database and operate on their own, lead by their own military commanders, administrators, and logisticians, not Her unwavering word.

OUR WOUNDED EARTH - THE ALREADY COVERED THEN
In the beginning of the Third Millennium - a peculiar discovery is made within government-funded laboratories at Black Mesa, a secluded and top-secret, heavily guarded research complex situated within the New Mexico badlands.
Military forces are integrated into the structure of the Combine's garrison upon 314, the new moniker of Sol-III, as Overwatch forces - more particularly, the Stabilization Force.
By the time of 45 AL, the last fires have been put out. Thresholds - massive fields of portal storms have cut out intercontinental travel, leaving the continents seperated to their own devices. The common life is not unlike that of the Occupations within the urbanized areas, where normalcy somewhat presides - the more things change, the more they stay the same. Closer to the fringes and frontier, however, things get shaky. Borders are rather not well defined within the Postoccupation, and so are the people living in those regions - all of various archetypes, whether paid to settle in the frontier or to evade the law. The latest topics, globally, are the wars and current happenings. Free Russochina has been engaged in a stalemate with Sarmatia, pushed to the 45th meridian east, fighting for Georgia. Lambda's democratic measures have not been put back into place, and Maxwell Kleiner remains regent for life. Judith Mossman, it is theorized, may not even be alive anymore, but the rumor also goes that she's in indefinite life support to legitimize the Maxwellist Regency. The most pertinent topic, however, is the sudden manifestation of Doctor Wallace Breen's voice in what is now known as the Harkening on November 18, 2067.
The Harkening can only be explained by unknown psionic phenomena, as it was heard by every single person on Earth. Witnesses remember strinkingly the piercing of their ears - before the voice of Breen called out, unchanged from his Occupation counterpart. "That day of transformation - is now." A simple quotation, self-referential to a pre-recorded Breencast speech made for propagandic distribution through city speakers worldwide. Ever since then, paranoia and militancy has grown more rampant. Combine cults have resurged, worshipping Breen as a messiah figure in the outlands and broken territories, with anti-insurgent efforts being made by governments worldwide to combat them. Lambda academics surmise that through anomalous projection not unlike those Vortal, a figure claiming to be Breen had caused this phenomena.
To add to the discord of the Harkening, research outposts in America reported the unusual migration of Vortigaunts to the western core of the former United States - willingly running into the Thresholds there, with courses plotted for New Mexico. What can be gleamed from this is that some anima of a great mind is beginning to form in the terrible, wretched heart of Darkness in North America, and that it is soon to wake - a foetal form of what held up the rift to Earth in those early, early days, as the Xenian infestation expands quicker and further then it ever did before, now fully encroaching the Mississippi. In Antarctica, those Thresholds have slowly begun to weaken, and small scouting parties are able to slam through the veil and enter the polar lands.
Still, life goes on. Normal men still farm and ranch, albeit assisted or even harvesting the fruit of Xen alongside the natural goods of Mother Earth. There are military and police structures, mishmashed from the Occupation and prior times. News and media continues to be distributed. Retirement homes are filled with those resistance fighters who saw the Citadels collapse, now diagnosed with the new DSM-VII addition of Post-Liberation Stress Disorder, closely related to PTSD with Combine related stress inducers. Some of them are the vanguard of the power structures, instructing the new young to fight in wars and to repeat the cycles of uprisings. The few Transhumans outside of the Clamp's reach are persecuted for their actions in the Occupation and now, still living off saline solution and nutrient blends required to keep their bodies moving, many of them hiding out in the frontier - America especially having a large percentage of Transhuman stowaways. Combine technology has been inherited and reverse engineered further in the richer parts of the world, with new forms of pulse gun and medical implements pursued. However, across the world, it has only grown poorer, with birthrates steeply dropping in a worldwide population crisis.
People look away, for the first time decades, to their inward problems. Now, they've grown tangible and outside their borders - with the resurgence of the Combine a very possible thing, alongside the Xenian cancer stabbing across the American heartland.

Citadel-17 detonates in a blaze of glory, with the urban blocs of City-17 raptured and twisted into mangled pieces of concrete, bathed in unknown exotic particles and high-resonance-frequencies.

WHERE WE STAND NOW
By the time of 45 AL, the last fires have been put out.
People look away, for the first time in decades, from their inward problems. Their eyes turn outward. Now, those problems have grown tangible and outside their borders - with the resurgence of the Combine a very possible thing, alongside the Xenian cancer stabbing across the American heartland.
